ABC reports that the Queensland government in Australia is to trial a sand bypass system to try and open up Mooloolaba Harbour on the Sunshine Coast.
“ The dredger Port Frederick is here to remove the entire sandbar and down to a depth greater than before ,” stated Coast Guard Mooloolaba spokesman John Annabell .
“ This is going to permit a trial sand pump to be put out off the end of the eastern wall. The sand and the water will be piped under the river mouth across and connected to the pipe across the beach,” he added.
Mr Annabell says he is relieved the Government has approved the trial.
So far more than $1.4 million has been spent trying to remove the sandbar.
