President Mahinda Rajapaksa made an inspection tour of Ruhunu Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port yesterday. He inspected the construction of port’s second stage which consists of six terminals, Sri Lanka Ports Authority reports.

All facilities are being built at the port premises to meet the needs of local and foreign investors. The government has planned to implement the second stage of the port as a mega project.

Plans have already been made to construct cargo and oil storage terminals. The area which was earmarked for the parking of imported vehicles also came under the inspection of the President. It has been estimated that US$ 808 million will be spent on the construction of the second phase of the project.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority Chairman Priyath Banduwickrama explained the details of the construction work to the President. Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena, Chinese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Yang Ziuping, parliamentarians Namal Rajapaksa and V. K. Indika accompanied the President.
