PD Ports’ container terminal facility at Teesport, Middlesbrough has won the ‘Over £4m Project’ category at the annual Robert Stephenson Awards.

These prestigious awards are presented by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) North East to recognise the excellent engineering projects being undertaken in the North East of the UK.

The contractor was Hall Construction Services Ltd, working alongside WSP Group and Royal Haskoning for PD Ports.

The judges congratulated the project team on an excellent example of partnering and teamwork in delivering this important project with minimal disruption and maximum benefit to PD Ports.

They said: “ This is a project which demonstrated the benefits of a whole team approach from inception to delivery and which successfully provided a greatly improved facility without disruption to a working port .”

The works at TCT2 (Teesport Container Terminal 2), which began in January 2011, involved the complete reconstruction of over five hectares of terminal area with new heavy duty paving designed to withstand the increased loads from the container stacks, as well as the installation of four new Rubber Tyre Gantry cranes (RTGs) and the implementation of a new terminal operating system.

This was the first phase of expanding Teesport’s container terminal capacity to 450,000 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit) from 235,000 TEU. This investment of some £16.7m positions Teesport as the second largest container port in the North of the UK.

David Robinson, Group Chief Executive Officer of PD Ports , said: We are delighted to see the project team win the award. The work was successfully completed on schedule, within budget and most importantly the work was carried out whilst we were still operating the terminal without any disruption to our customers. This award is very much deserved for all of the project team ”

Stephen Hall, Managing Director of Hall Construction Services Ltd commented “ We are proud to win this prestigious award for the first time and it is a well deserved reward to all the project team involved .”
