A massive dredging project on Whitefish Lake started on Tuesday morning, according to nbcmontana.com.
Crews will dredge sediment that was contaminated after two tankers spilled 25,000 gallons of diesel into the bay in 1989.
EPA officials say the project is state of the art.
On-Site Coordinator Steven Merritt said: “ The excavator that we’ve got has a GPS guided bucket so its basically mapped to the same mapping we’ve got of these contaminated sediments, so it’ll be available to basically pull out the exact areas that we need to and then put them into the dumpster.”
The contaminants will eventually travel to North Dakota, where they will be disposed of in a waste facility.
