The Al Mahaar Cutter Suction Dredge (CSD) operations ceased late on Thursday 31 May due to maintenance issues.
With a massive Spring tide, operations did not recommence over the weekend and the Al Mahaar remains out of operation.
A very large tidal range is expected in the harbour with highs up to 4.59m and lows of 0.59m and this will have a significant effect on water turbidity in Gladstone Harbour.
As with most spring and king tides the natural turbidity increases were expected, and as part of an adaptive approach to carry out the Western Basin Dredging Project with the minimal impact to the environment, a Turbidity Management Plan was put in place to reduce dredge activities.
“The decision to reduce dredging on the Western Basin Dredging Project last week was taken to allow water conditions return to normal as soon as possible after the Spring tide today,” GPC CEO Leo Zussino explained. “ The Al Mahaar is expected to resume this week as turbidity falls.”
The two backhoe dredges continue to operate.
