The Herald Tribune reports that the Commissioners on Tuesday approved a measure that will allow more sludge in the county landfill at a lower cost as a way to let work continue on the Wares Creek dredging project.

This project was halted last month after the county learned the dredging was producing more sludge than its landfill could handle, and that the cost to dump it was driving up the overall project cost too much.

According to the Herald, the new rate of $36 per ton will apply for up to 30,000 additional tons of material above the 5,655 tons previously approved.

The Wares Creek dredging project being done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began this spring and seeks to clean out sludge and muck that has stalled the flow of the Manatee River tributary that runs through much of central Bradenton.
