Later this summer, Honeywell International will begin dredging on the Onondaga Lake, YNN reports.
Dredging is the next step in a $450 million remediation project which has undergone five years of design and planning.
More than 500 scientists, engineers, and laborers are working on the project and more local workers will be hired as the process continues.
Officials say the dredging and capping will take roughly three to four years to complete.
“We are finally here, people have said, ‘oh you know the lake’s never going to be cleaned up. It’s been dirty for one hundred years.’ Well, we’re here. It’s happening, that lake is going to be cleaned up. It’s happening this summer. We’re on a four to five year schedule to get it dredged, and it’s an incredibly exciting period of time, ” said Diane Carlton, NYS DEC Region 7 Public Affairs Director .
