What do six Australian soldiers, a 1,200km mountain bike ride and an award-winning civil engineering and dredging company all have in common? The annual Legs for Legends charity bike ride of course.
Sunshine Coast based company, Hall Contracting, have donated $3,000 to the charity event that raises money for the families of Commando comrades killed and wounded in Afghanistan.
Managing Director of Hall Contracting, Cameron Hall , said supporting the communities in which they work is very important to the entire Hall family.
“ We are proud to support various charities and community groups, and have provided financial aid to more than 20 organisations in recent years, ” Mr Hall said.
“ Supporting Legs for Legends is just an extension of that philosophy and we look forward to following the progress of the six brave bike riders when they depart for their challenging journey at the end of the month .”
Legs for Legends starts at Norseman, Western Australia, on June 25 and ends at Ceduna, South Australia, on July 12. The ride will take 11 days, and 10 legs of the journey are each dedicated to the families of those lost in Afghanistan with the final leg dedicated to the wounded.
Each rider will individually ride across the Nullarbor Plain, supported by a small crew. The daily distances pose a significant challenge to the riders, who, travelling at an average speed of 20-25km/h, face between three and eight hours each day in the saddle.
Mr Hall said all money raised goes towards the Commando Welfare Trust, a body set up to support the families of serving and former members of Special Operations Command (SOCOM) units based on Australia’s east coast.
“ We are proud to contribute to this very worthy cause and in some small way, help to make a difference to the families of the fallen and wounded ,” he said.
