Manatee County officials have set plans for numerous renourishment projects during the next couple of years, Bradenton.com reports.

One of the planned projects is the $19.6 million Central Island Project which would provide 1.85 million cubic yards of sand to Anna Maria Island’s midsection.

This project is expected to commence in October 2014 and last until March 2015. It will create a finished dry beach 150 feet wide when it is complete.

Charlie Hunsicker, the county’s director of natural resources stated: “ The beaches of Anna Maria are well-known, they’re famous, and they’re there because we make an effort each and every year to bring the sand back to the system that was lost to storms, erosion and by nature .”

The cost of the project will be divided in the following manner: the federal government will provide $10.6 million and the state and county will each contribute $4.5 million.

A concurrent $4.8 million proposed project would pump approximately 400,000 cubic yards of sand along the North Shore Drive area.
