Mississippi mud may be used to stave off erosion, reports marshallindependent.com.

USACE wants to take mud that it routinely stirs up and place it on the western side of the delta at the river’s mouth.

The corps is looking forward to build up wetlands and marsh in what is now open water.

Corps’ plan is to place the mud in West Bay.

The river mouth is known as the Bird’s Foot delta and is a crucial place on the Mississippi.

Studies show that the Bird’s Foot delta is sinking about 1 inch every year.

The corps is proposing to take up to 10 million cubic yards of the river mud every two years and place it in the West Bay.
