The Army Corps of Engineers plans to open bids early next month for a project to deepen a 9.5-mile stretch of the Delaware River main channel, according to delawareonline.com.
Some 16 miles of the 103-mile shipping channel between Philadelphia and the Atlantic Ocean already have been cut to 45 feet from its previous 40-foot approved depth.
Corps managers are scheduled to open bids for a roughly $20 million section between the Walt Whitman Bridge and the southwestern end of Philadelphia International Airport on July 10, with a contract possibly awarded in August.
A contract for a 14-mile segment between Port Penn and the Woodland Beach area east of Smyrna could be awarded weeks later, probably in September.
