Progress on the sealing of the northern section of the front bund wall at Fisherman’s Landing is on schedule.
The 8.8km bund wall created to reclaim 274 hectares at the northern end the current Fisherman’s Landing site was completed in August 2011, since then 4 million cubic metres of dredge material have been stored inside the wall.
The material is pumped into the reclamation area using cutter suction dredges and sinkerlines.
The Transitional Environmental Program (TEP) approved on 25th June allows for bund sealing works to be undertaken until the 6th August to seal the northern section of the front bund wall of the reclamation area at Fisherman’s Landing.
The TEP is scheduled to seal the 900 metre section of the front bund wall to a 50 metre width using dredge material.
Since the TEP was actioned approximately 180,000 cubic metres of dredge material has been placed on the inside of the front bund wall.
Two cutter suction dredges have been operating under the TEP since the 28 June. There remains approximately 400 metres of the bund still to cover.
“ Sealing the north bund wall under the TEP is a strategy to reduce the impacts on the environment, ” GPC CEO Leo Zussino said.
“We are conducting the sealing process now as this is the dormant period for our seagrass beds and the impacts of this dredging will be minimal on these seagrass beds.”
The growing season for seagrass beds begins around July/August depending on ambient conditions.
