After being forced off the water by Tropical Storm Debby, the dredging of Blind Pass is finally underway – three weeks behind schedule.
According to nbc-2.com, the crews on the project faced multiple setbacks, including the weather from Debby and broken pump motor, which has since been repaired.
And Monday night, crews started pulling sand out of the pass and now they’re working around the clock to remove sand that’s filled in there over time.
By the project’s end, the Division of Natural Resources hopes pumps move 125,000 cubic yards – about 1.5 Olympic size swimming pools worth of sand out of the narrow pass connecting Sanibel with Captiva and onto beaches one mile south that are in need of renourishment.
Yesterday, the dredged sand was dumped onto Bowman’s Beach.
