Rock removal from portions of the 40-foot deep Main Ship Channel in the Boston Harbor Federal Navigation Project in Boston, Mass., will be conducted under the terms of a $2,231,250.00 contract issued recently by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.

Work will be accomplished by Burnham Associates, Inc., of Salem, Mass. The project is scheduled to start on or about Aug. 1, 2012 and be completed by about Sept. 30, 2012. The contract was awarded on July 16, 2012.

“ The project consists of the removal of rock/ledge from 7 locations in the Main Ship Channel of Boston Harbor ,” said Project Manager Mike Keegan, of the Corps’ New England District, Programs and Project Management Division in Concord, Mass. “ The rock that is removed from the channel will be placed at the rock reef portion of the Massachusetts Bay Disposal Site located approximately 20 miles offshore .”

Borings have been taken at the locations and rock testing performed. The contractor will drill and blast the rock to fracture it and it then will be removed with a mechanical clam shell dredge.

The project will be managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District. All work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps of Engineers Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
