The silt build-up from Kenosha’s lakefront has been removed as envisaged by the dredging project of the Kenosha Harbor and the Southport Marina, therefore the dredging operations are ready to move to the next stage, Kenosha news portal reports.
Shoreline Builders, in charge of the project realization which started on July 16th, is moving its dredgers from the Kenosha Harbor to the Southport Marina over the next week, which will be dredged before work proceeds to the Kenosha Harbor for the final stage.
According to the City Engineer Shelly Billingsley, fierce waves in the harbor have induced the transfer of works to the marina.
“ Once they’re done with Southport they will move back and finish the harbor ,” Billingsley said.
Based on the project specifications, the channel will be dredged to a depth of 12 feet, whereas the dredged material will be pumped two miles north to holding ponds in Pennoyer Park.
Shoreline Builders workers have been digging up sand last week along Simmons Island so as to bury the pipe that carries the dredging materials to Pennoyer Park deeper under the sand, since it got uncovered.
The Kenosha Harbor was last dredged in 2009. Based on the city’s budget, the harbor was scheduled to be dredged last year, but the city failed to carry out the work and the permit lapsed.
The entire dredging project should be completed by late July or early August.
