The Newport Beach City Council voted Tuesday to allocate an additional $3.9 million to dredging the harbor’s shallowest spots, bringing the total project to $10.4 million, including federal funds, reports dailypilot.com.
The City Council considered funding to dredge areas as part of Phase II of the project. Next week the County Board of Supervisors will be also consider contributing funds to dredge the County Tidelands portions of the project.
Phase II of the project is supposed to dispose material at the EPA’s approved disposal site (“LA-3”) which is located 4.5 miles off the coast of Newport Beach.
The Port of Long Beach originally gave Newport Beach a June 30 deadline to get its dredging sediment to the approved fill area. But as the Confined Aquatic Disposal site got close to capacity, port officials called for a hold on all sediment coming into Long Beach.
