The portworld.com reports that the Nigerian Maritime Authorities are looking at ways to fund cleaning up Nigerian waterways.

A new tax has been flagged up by Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi, director-general of the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Funds collected from the tax, which will be levied on each ship calling at a Nigerian port, will be aimed at cleaning up Nigeria’s polluted coastal waterways.

“ The new rule will be known as the sea protection levy regulation, wherein regardless of who pollutes the water, every vessel that has business to do in our ports will be liable to pay a fee for cleaning of the water, ” said Akpobolokemi.
