The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation (DOBOR), on behalf of Sen. Ron D. Kouchi (District 7), and Rep. Dee Morikawa (District 16), invites the public to attend an informational meeting on the planned Kikiaola small boat harbor sand bypass program, as well as provide input on harbor issues.

The meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 15, at Waimea Neighborhood Center, 4556 Makeke Rd. in Waimea.

In 2009, the federal Kikiaola harbor project was completed. It included: reconstruction of the east breakwater to make it higher and wider; removal of the existing spur at the tip of the breakwater; reconstruction of the outer portion of the west breakwater; dredging a new 700 foot long entrance channel and access channel.

In 2010, the state completed projects to dredge the inner harbor basin and replace the wooden marginal pier. Since that time DOBOR has received numerous concerns from harbor users and inquiries about what is planned for a sand bypass program.

Future projects will include repairing the root of the west breakwater and implementing a sand by-pass program. DOBOR has contracted with Oceanit Laboratories, Inc. to prepare plans and specifications for both projects.
