The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers maintenance dredging project is now underway at the Ponce de Leon Inlet.
Jenn Miller, a public affairs specialist with the Corps of Engineers’ Jacksonville office , said: “ The dredging, which began Friday and is expected to wrap up in 20 days, will remove about 80,000 cubic yards of sand from the channel.”
According to news-journalonline.com, Currituck, the 150-foot-long small hopper dredger is used for the project.
“The dredger will work 24 hours a day, and we assume a two-hour timeframe for each load, ” Miller stated.
The sand and bottom sediments will be placed about a mile south of the inlet, 1,500 feet offshore at the 12-foot contour, reports news-journalonline.com.
“Since the dredger does not have a pipeline, there will be minimal, if any disturbance to the inlet,” Miller concluded.
