The Wrightsville Beach residents fear that the maintenance dredging will result in fresh erosion of the small beaches along Banks Channel.
According to SF Gate, they said that as a result of regular dredging over the decades adjacent properties have lost more than 60 feet of dry sand since the station opened nearly four decades ago – requiring some homeowners to install bulkheads to protect their properties.
The Coast Guard said: “This dredging work would not involve any expansion or deepening of the basin beyond what’s already been authorized, and is proposing to dispose of the estimated 3,000 cubic yards of material on a nearby spoil island that’s been used in the past.”
“ The proposed dredging is necessary for the federal agency to continue to perform its mission ,“ concluded Coast Guard spokesperson .
