Sen. Johnny Isakson, Sen. Saxby Chambliss and Rep. Jack Kingston, all Georgia Republicans, have submitted a request to the Federal officials for the removal of silt at the entrance to the Port of Brunswick.
Sen. Isakson said: “ We’ve got a buildup now in the area just into the port, under the (Sidney) Lanier bridge. It’s going to have to be moved .”
Romenews-tribune.com reports that recent tropical storms have deposited large amounts of silt, forcing bigger ships to wait until high tide to enter or exit the harbor.
According to Billy Birdwell, spokesman for the agency in Savannah , the Army Corps plans to dredge the inner harbor by the end of September, but it must wait until February to get to the entrance.
“ We had a short environmental window this year because of the warm weather, and the turtles came back early ,” he concluded.
