Ocean Dredging DSM Inc began recently the dredging in the Bay of Sept-Iles, near the Cliffs Wabush Mines’ platform in Pointe-Noire.
This is the first step in a 20-month project for the realization of a multi-user dock capable of accommodating larger ore carriers.
This is a $220 million construction site which represents a new phase of the port development.
Océan Dragage DSM Inc. will take 60 days to dredge 400,000 cubic meters to reach a depth of 21 meters in an area which is approximately 15 meters deep presently. This additional phase of dredging will allow the new facilities to accommodate ore carriers of over 200,000 tons, known as “Cape size” ships and eventually “Chinamax” ships, which are more than 300,000 tons.
