According to sfgate.com, the U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons and Representative John Carney planned to join Army Corps of Engineers officials today for a tour of the Delaware River and discussion of the economic impact of the dredging plan.
Delaware River dredging supporters say that this project will help keep area ports competitive.
“ It’s very important not only for Delaware, but for the region,” stated Eugene Bailey, executive director of the Port of Wilmington . “You need deeper water to bring in larger ships, which should generate additional business and provide additional jobs.”
Opponents of the project argue that dredging will do ecological and economic harm to the river.
“The sediment stirred up by the dredging could be contaminated with toxic chemicals that will pollute the river and harm the fish population, ” say environmentalists.
