Jim Janney, the Imperial Beach Mayor, kicked off the start of a $28.5 million San Diego beach replenishment project, reports imperialbeachnewsca.com.
The sand for this project is being dredged from designated offshore areas within a mile of the shoreline.
“ Beaches are the number one recreational spot in San Diego. Sand replenishment helps support our local economy, protects public and private infrastructure from high tides and storm damage, and benefits shorebirds by providing them with additional sandy beach habitat, ” stated Janney.
The project, a 24/7 operation, starts in Imperial Beach in the southern part of the county and moves north to Oceanside and Encinitas, then concludes in Solana Beach and Carlsbad.
A total of eight beaches will get the new sand.
