During the campaign for his third term, Senator Bill Nelson stated that he’s been working hard to secure JaxPort’s economic future.
“ The port of Jacksonville is a big economic engine for Northeast Florida, ” he told WOKV.
Nelson noted the Panama Canal Expansion, which is projected to be finished by the end of 2014, and said: “ When that happens, the port of Jacksonville wants to be able to have those big ships come in.”
“ In order to do that, you have to dredge JaxPort down to a depth of 50 feet,” he added.
Before a July visit by President Barack Obama, the completion date for an Army Corps feasibility study on JaxPort harbor deepening was pushed up from 2014 to April 2013, according to jacksonville.com.
