Maintenance dredging of the Federal navigation channel into Clinton Harbor in Clinton, Conn., will be completed under the terms of a $1,011,042.00 contract issued recently by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District.
Work will be accomplished by Select Transportation, Inc., of Hilliard, Ohio. The project is scheduled to start on or about Nov. 1, 2012 and take about 3 months to complete. The contract was awarded on Sept. 24, 2012. Funding for the dredging contract was provided by the State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation.
“ The work on this project consists of maintenance dredging of approximately 45,000 cubic yards of predominantly sandy sediment by hydraulic dredging from the Clinton Harbor 8-foot navigation channel, ” said Project Manager Craig Martin, of the Corps’ New England District, Programs/Project Management Division, in Concord, Mass.
The channel is 100-feet wide, about 1.1 miles in length, and extends from Long Island Sound into Clinton Harbor in Clinton, Conn. The sandy dredge material will be pumped via pipeline to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Conn., about 1.8 miles away to the west.
All dredging operations will occur between Oct. 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013 to minimize impact to natural resources in the area. A major emphasis in the dredging project is removal of the tip of Cedar Island which has migrated into the channel, making navigation safety a concern for the Clinton maritime community.
The work will not include dredging 2 small anchorages and a portion of the channel north of Cedar Island where material is too silty to be placed at Hammonasset Beach State Park.
The project will be managed by the Corps and all work will be accomplished under the supervision of a Corps’ Quality Assurance Representative to assure compliance with contract requirements.
