A special budget committee meeting of Council has endorsed the development of a concept design for a future Shoreline Project at Palm Beach.

The committee endorsed $1.2 million being allocated to complete the concept design and commence community engagement activities.

Mayor Tom Tate said the project would improve the resilience of Palm Beach against the ongoing threat of damage resulting from beach erosion and storm surge.

“ This project is a response to the vulnerability of the beach to the severe weather ,” he said.

“ The beach, from Currumbin Creek to Tallebudgera Creek, has been identified in the Gold Coast Shoreline Management Plan (GCSMP) as a priority area for capital works investment by Council .

“ Palm Beach is in a heavily eroded state. Existing public and private infrastructure is at risk of being damaged if further storm events occur in the short term. ”

Cr Tate said the funding outcome would result in Council being able to determine future action at Palm Beach with some certainty.

“ The project is strongly aligned to the Queensland Coastal Management Plan and Council’s draft Ocean Beach Strategy, which Council will be asked to adopt at its next meeting .”
