Senior Geologist David Latham, P.G., and Project Geologist Aaron Getchell, CPG, P.G., both Geosyntec practitioners based in Florida, will be among the panelists appearing at the 15th Annual Statewide Brownfields Conference, set for October 28-31, 2012.

The event, sponsored by the Florida Brownfields Association (FBA), will be held in St. Petersburg at the Renaissance Vinoy Resort and Golf Club, 501 5th Avenue NE. Also attending the conference on behalf of Geosyntec will be Associate Jim Linton, P.G., and Principal Nandra Weeks, P.E., a former FBA president.

Mr. Latham’s panel includes Todd Romero of KB Labs Inc. and Mike Wightman of GeoView. They will discuss the use of several of the latest site assessment technologies that are available to assist with the more cost-effective delineation of contaminants and source materials commonly found at brownfields sites. Direct sensing methods such as ultraviolet fluorescence, the hydraulic profiling tool, and the membrane interface probe will be presented, as will surface geophysical methods such as ground-penetrating radar and electromagnetics. Mr. Latham also will provide the panel with an environmental consulting perspective in discussions of how these technologies can be applied specifically as part of a site assessment process to expedite the overall cleanup and control costs.

Mr. Getchell’s panel includes Raghu Chatrathi from CSX Transportation and John Sego with the Brownfields Section of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The panelists will discuss overcoming challenges associated with assessment and planned remediation at the Old Hopewell Road site. Geosyntec practitioners have assisted CSX Transportation with this project since 2006, addressing organochlorinated pesticide impacts at the site of a former chemical company located in Tampa, Florida.

The annual Florida Brownfields conference brings together a broad range of stakeholders – including property owners, developers, government officials, environmental professionals, and community leaders – to discuss the latest strategies being used in the cleanup, redevelopment, and restoration of brownfields sites throughout the state.
