The long-awaited cleanup project at the Arkema, one of Portland Harbor Superfund’s dirtiest sites located along the west side of the Willamette River, is finally underway, reports oregonlive.com.

Arkema’s work appears to be going well, but testing will have to show the system is keeping contaminants at bay, said Sean Sheldrake, an EPA project manager .

“There’s always a level of uncertainty, and we’ve got to prove performance to ensure we don’t have an unacceptable ongoing source (of pollution) to the Willamette River, especially at this site, ” Sheldrake said.
