On behalf of the Port of Anacortes commission, Chris Johnson accepted the Western Dredging Association (WEDA) 2012 Environmental Excellence Award in San Antonio, Texas.
This award was received a few months ago, in recognition of the development, implementation and integrated cleanup strategy used in the restoration of the Former Scott Site Paper Mill Environmental Cleanup completed in 2011.
The WEDA award recognizes projects for their outstanding contribution to meeting WEDA’s goals of enhancing the marine environment by promoting communication and understanding of environmental issues and stimulating new solutions associated with dredging and dredged material placement. The Port of Anacortes, its partners and its team members achieved WEDA’s goal.
Part of the Port’s Focus Fidalgo environmental cleanup, the Scott Site Paper Mill environmental cleanup was nearly a $37 million project and took almost three years to complete. The Port’s strategy included a cost-recovery approach that provided funding, agency partnerships, dedicated project oversight, and an aggressive schedule that minimized overall project cost and risk.
GEO Engineers was utilized as the technical leader for this project which used sophisticated dredging techniques to remove contaminated material and create a new marine habitat. Working together in close partnership with the Port of Anacortes, the Washington State Department of Ecology and Kimberly-Clark Corporation, contributed to the successful completion of the Port’s cleanup and restoration project that enabled the Port to return the waterfront to safe public use.
