Former Minister of Transport, Rear Admiral Festus Porbeni considers dredging of the River Niger as a possible option for flood defence, reports thisdaylive.
He discussed the dredging possibility as a good solution for the flood issues of the River Niger which is the third-longest river in Africa, exceeded only by the Nile and the Congo River.
Like the Nile, the Niger floods yearly causing major damages to human lives, property, and livestock. Cities and towns have been devastated due to flood damage.
The current flood disaster in some states in the middle belt region of the country is lamentable for its huge human and property casualty, particularly as it was largely created by natural causes, reports the guardiannews.
The former Minister continues to struggle for dredging which could bring benefits to minimum three communities in the River Niger area and the Bayelsa State.
