Due to several difficulties, the Karnaphuli river dredging program is progressing very slowly.
These obstacles are created by local political activists and some Chittagong Port officials, reports thefinancialexpress-bd.com.
Chittagong Port Engineer Sahidul Islam stated: “ If the project is not completed within the specific timeframe of 600 days from the launching of the project the dredged areas would be silted afresh. ”
Until October this year, around 55 pct of this dredging project has been wrapped up, but the contractor’s main goal was to complete about 85 pct of the dredging program.
The local political activists are demanding toll from Malaysian Maritime and Dredging Corporation (MMDC), the company which has been given this contract.
Local Agent of MMDC Abu Jafar Md Saleh informed the Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan of the matter, according to thefinancialexpress-bd.com.
