Jackson County Port Authority awarded a $1.8 million contract for a site and drainage improvement project at Port of Pascagoula to Talley Contracting Inc, reports sunherald.com.

The project will improve open storage and cargo handling area and provide adequate drainage for the site at the South Terminal.

“ This is just one of many steps for the entire redevelopment of the port ,” port director Mark McAndrews said.

The Port of Pascagoula, located on the southeastern coast of Mississippi is a full-service deep water port with modern facilities for handling cargo from around the world. The Port’s two harbors include a combination of public and private terminals handling in excess of 35 million tons of cargo through the channel annually. The Port is the largest seaport in Mississippi, and ranks nationally in the top 20 ports in foreign cargo volume.

The port location is naturally advantageous to importers, exporters and carriers shipping via the Gulf of Mexico. Pascagoula port is equipped with the facilities, technology and manpower to efficiently handle a wide variety of cargoes.

One of the major future plans for the Port of Pascagoula is the widening plan of the Pascagoula Bar Channel from 450 to 550 feet which is expected to begin 2013, and also the Pascagoula River Harbor Dredged Material Disposal facilities project which has started and will be under construction 12-15 months. On schedule for completion in late 2013.
