The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, awards a dredging contract for Grand Haven Harbor on Lake Michigan.
The $541,275 contract, awarded to King Co., Holland, Mich., calls for dredging the inner and outer harbors and placing the dredged materials near the shoreline. The dredging is scheduled to begin in April and take about six weeks.
“ The Corps of Engineers is pleased to undertake this dredging project as part of its mission to aid commercial navigation,” said Lt. Col. Robert Ells, district engineer . “ Vessels using Grand Haven Harbor carry important commodities including limestone, sand, gravel, coal, cement and manufactured products which help fuel West Michigan’s economy.”
Grand Haven Harbor totaled 868,000 tons of material shipped or received in 2009, the most recent year for which figures are available. Grand Haven is a federally designated harbor of refuge and home to the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Grand Haven Station.
The dredging contract was awarded under the Corps’ Multiple Award Task Order Contract, MATOC, program which the Detroit District has established with 10 companies capable of dredging in the Great Lakes. MATOC is designed to provide greater flexibility and expedite the bid solicitation-award process for dredging in Great Lakes commercial shipping channels and harbors.
