According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the next step in the Delaware River Main Channel Deepening Project is set to commence before the end of this month.
The Delaware River dredging program will take place between Port Penn and Woodland Beach and will cost $18.5 million, reports nj.com.
Ed Voigt, the Army Corps spokesman, said that this work will be completed by California-based Dutra Dredging Co., and will last for several months.
The deeper channel will protect local ports, businesses and jobs as global shippers increasingly turn to larger, deeper-bottomed vessels able to take advantage of a newly widened and deepened Panama Canal, the port and labor groups stated.
