The Ghana Urban Water Limited (GUWL) has completed removing silt deposited at the Daboase Water Intake Point in the Wassa East District of the Western Region.
The de-siltation was undertaken to improve inflow of raw water into the Daboase Water Treatment Plant for processing as a result of low inflow of water created by activities of small scale miners along the banks of River Pra.
The Western Region Communication Officer of the GUWL, Mr. Kwamena Acquah, told the Ghana News Agency in Takoradi that the silt deposited at the Water Intake Point had intermittently caused damage to the company’s pumps.
Mr. Acquah said the water shortage had reduced water production at the Daboase Water Treatment Plant from six million gallons of water per day to three million, necessitating water rationing in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
He said the pollution of raw water by small scale miners had also increased cost of production of the GUWL and appealed to the government to help flush out illegal miners in the area.
