The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a nearly $48 million contract for the completion of Phase One of the Site 1 Impoundment Project to Munilla Construction Management LLC (d/b/a MCM) of Miami, Fla., Jan. 18.
“The Corps successfully worked through recent construction issues and the project is back on track, ” said Corps Project Manager, Stephen Baisden . “ We are looking forward to completing the project and re-opening the L-40 levee to the public. The project site is adjacent to the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge, and we know that it is an important resource for the community, especially recreational users .”
The Site 1 Contract # 1 D-525N (L-40 Modification) and Miscellaneous Features includes clearing, grubbing and dewatering activities, miscellaneous demolitions, establishing onsite borrow and disposal areas, earthwork modifications to approximately 15,000 linear feet of the existing L-40 levee, installation of dam monitoring instrumentation, placement of turf reinforcement mat and smooth plate soil cement. The project also includes construction of a six acre wildlife wetland area and auxiliary spillway, S-530, located in the L-40 levee.
Work on the project is scheduled to begin in April 2013 and to be completed by December 2014. The Site 1 Impoundment Project in southwest Palm Beach County is a component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a joint effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District and the local sponsor, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD).
