Avalon’s major beach fill project is expected to conclude sometime during the upcoming weekend of January 26th-27th.

During a progress meeting held in Avalon on Wednesday, January 23rd the contractor for the project announced that the actual pumping of sand could wrap up during the upcoming weekend.

The work is being done by Norfolk Dredging under a contract with the United States Army Corps of Engineers, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the Borough of Avalon.

To date, more than 230,000 cubic yards of sand has been dredged from Townsend’s Inlet and placed on the Avalon beachfront. As of Wednesday, the beach work was being conducted on 20th Street. The project will result in 290,000 cubic yards of sand placed on the beach from the 8th Street jetty south to the 25th Street beach. More than 70% of the total project has been completed by Norfolk Dredging.

Depending on the track of a low pressure system that could bring some snow to our region on Friday afternoon and Friday evening, the sand pumping operation may end as early as Saturday, January 26th. A final inspection of the new beachfront is scheduled for early next week. Norfolk Dredging will then de-moblize its equipment off the Avalon beachfront next week and take it to a project in Fire Island, New York. Various dune, sand fencing, dune grass, and crossover work will be completed after the sand dredging operation is complete.

After the project is concluded in Fire Island, New York, Norfolk Dredging will return to the 7 Mile beachfront to conduct a major beach fill project in Stone Harbor. That project is tentatively scheduled to begin on April 12, 2013 and finish before Memorial Day weekend.
