Sunshine Coast Council’s foreshore protection works at Golden Beach have commenced sooner than planned, with a dredge arriving at Pumicestone Passage ahead of schedule this week.
Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer said the scheduled 30 day maintenance renourishment period had been brought forward and extended to ensure erosion caused by ex-tropical Cyclone Oswald is restored.
“ The dredging will stretch from Bells Creek to Jellicoe Street to compensate for previous erosion events and buffer against future erosion ,” said Cr Dwyer.
“ Council will dredge around 10,000 cubic metres of sand to Golden Beach this year .
“ Future dredging will occur as needed, with the volume varying each year depending on the level of erosion along the foreshore. ”
Place Management and Delivery portfolio Councillor Greg Rogerson said renourishment works were essential to maintain the sand profile of some Sunshine Coast beaches.
“ Our beaches are an important part of the Sunshine Coast community and it’s crucial that we restore and protect them where we can .
“ The need for this renourishment project was highlighted by recent weather events—restoring a buffer to the beach will help protect against seasonal erosion and future storms .”
Council invited community feedback on the renourishment project before receiving approvals from the Queensland Government and the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Pollution and Communities.
