The Oswego Harbor needs around $1.8 million in additional dredging work, according to the Port of Oswego Executive Director Jonathan Daniels.
Regarding this issue, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer stated: “ The Port of Oswego is gearing up for a boost in ship traffic and imports in valuable commodities, but the federal government holds the keys to unlocking the full potential of this trade hub in Central New York,” and added that the federal aid is a good investment, because this port pumps more than $1 billion into the local economy each year.
Syracuse.com reports that Schumer is pushing hard for a long-term initiative to supply federal help for the Oswego Harbor dredging program.
The Port of Oswego is the first U.S. port of call and deepwater port on the Great Lakes from the St. Lawrence Seaway. Located on Lake Ontario on route to the interior of North America, this port is accessible from any international port in the world.
The port entrance depth is 27 feet, the width is 750 feet, the turning basin is 115 acres and it has no restrictions on beam length for ships entering the harbor.
