U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., has been named the ranking Republican for the Senate Subcommittee on International Trade, Customs and Global Competitiveness within the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance .
The trade subcommittee handles a wide range of issues relevant to trade and U.S. competitiveness in world business — both of which are key issues for Isakson’s home state of Georgia and the numerous companies located there that do business internationally.
Isakson’s top priority for Georgia has been the deepening of the Port of Savannah, from 42 to 47 feet, so that it will be able to remain competitive by accommodating larger ships coming through the Panama Canal. Isakson also has a long history of supporting free trade agreements and working to minimize the trade deficit with other nations.
“ Free trade and the expansion of the Port of Savannah are essential to job retention and creation not only in Georgia, but across the nation ,” said Isakson. “ I am pleased and honored to be named the ranking member of this crucial Senate subcommittee .”
Isakson has also been tapped to serve on two other subcommittees on the Senate Committee on Finance: the Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Subcommittee and the Social Security, Pensions, and Family Policy Subcommittee.
Isakson brings to his role on the Finance Committee 30-plus years of experience as a small businessman who had to make a payroll and comply with federal tax regulations. The Committee has jurisdiction over tax policy that affects all American families and small businesses, as well as over trade and programs such as Social Security and Medicare.
