As part of a scheduled tour of the UAE, Abu Dhabi Ports Company welcomed H.R.H. Prince Joachim of Denmark to Khalifa Port yesterday, where he was shown around the new state-of-the-art facilities of the Gulf Region’s only semi-automated, deep-water port.
Showing a keen interest in the developments of the recently opened Khalifa Port and adjacently situated Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad), H.R.H. Prince Joachim was welcomed by Executive Vice President, Ports, ADPC, Mohamed Al Shamisi, at the hi-tech, multi-screen, ADPC Visitor Centre in Taweelah, after having been taken on a guided tour of the port itself.
Reflecting on his tour of the port, its facilities, and Kizad, H.R.H. Prince Joachim , said: “ Khalifa Port is clearly an impressive achievement in terms of the time it took to build and become operational, and is undoubtedly an excellent addition to Abu Dhabi’s growing trade and economic infrastructure.”
Mohamed Al Shamisi, Executive Vice President, Ports, ADPC , commenting on H.R.H.’s visit to Khalifa Port, said:
“It is a great pleasure to welcome His Royal Highness to the UAE and we are honoured that he has taken the time and interest to come and view Abu Dhabi’s most significant maritime achievement in recent times – Khalifa Port.”
“Like the UAE, Denmark has a strong historical tradition and connection with the sea and, of course, in the modern world, it is also the home country of Maersk – the world’s largest container shipping company by revenue.”
“We are hopeful that this visit is not just a fruitful and informative one, for His Royal Highness, but that it also serves as a platform for raising awareness about Khalifa Port’s facilities and the ease of doing business with Abu Dhabi, for Danish companies, ” added Al Shamisi.
Khalifa Port was officially inaugurated on 12th December 2012, but was operational from 1st September, of the same year. It is an advanced technology, semi-automated port, and the main maritime gateway serving Abu Dhabi’s trade and economic interests.
In its first four months of operations, and during the transition from Mina Zayed, the port handled over 250,000 TEUs; the target, as revealed by ADPC in January of this year, is to see around 1mn TEUs handled, in the 2013 calendar year.
