State Senator Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington) joined State Representative Diana Urban (D-North Stonington) and State Representative Elissa Wright (D-Groton) in praising the State Bond Commission’s expected approval today of funds to finance dredging of shoal areas of the Mystic River in Stonington and Groton near the Mystic Seaport.

The project is anticipated to create or retain 116 construction related jobs.

“The Mystic River is one of the area’s great natural assets, enjoyed by residents and visitors alike,” said Sen. Maynard. “ Home to the Mystic Seaport Museum and numerous marinas, the river is important both for its natural beauty and the commerce it supports. This dredging will allow continued access for all those who enjoy this extraordinary place.”

“This allows harbor access for the historic Charles Morgan and other large vessels to our premier tourist area, ” Rep. Urban said. “ It is gratifying that we are able to step up and help enhance this important area of Southeastern Connecticut.”

“The Mystic River and Mystic Seaport are vital to our region’s economy,” Rep. Wright said. “ This is an important step in ensuring safe passage of the Charles W. Morgan, when the historic wooden whaleship returns to seaworthy status, and continued access by other large boats to one of Connecticut’s top tourist destinations.”

The funding for this project is part of bonding for improvements to ports and marinas, including dredging and navigational direction. Additional funds are expected to be approved to conduct a study of the strategy for economic development in the New Haven, New London and Bridgeport ports.
