North Western Basin Branch of FSUE Rosmorport has invited bidders to submit their offers for the Luga River dredging program.

This development project will include repair works and dredging on the approach canal at the mouth of the Luga River, reports portnews.ru.

Initial price of this dredging contract is RUR 67,099,735.031. According to portnews.ru, the deadline date for application of bids is April 19, 2013.

Background

The Luga River is a river in Novgorod Oblast and Leningrad Oblast of Russia. The river flows into the Luga Bay of the Gulf of Finland.

At the mouth of the Luga is the site of the Ust-Luga container terminal. Ust-Luga is the site of an important coal and fertiliser terminal, constructed at a cost of $2.1 billion.

Construction works started in 1997, in part to avoid dry cargo shipments through the Baltic States, and were accelerated at the urging of President Vladimir Putin, who inaugurated the new port facilities in 2001.

The 3,700-metre approach canal is deep and capable of accommodating ships with a capacity of 150,000 tonnes and more.
