State Representative Terry Brown (D-Pigeon) voted in favor of Senate Bill 233 yesterday, a bill that would fund more than 70 different projects, including the James H. Lincoln Memorial Bathing Beach acquisition.
The bill also funds 49 emergency dredging projects across the state, including Caseville Municipal Harbor, Harbor Beach Municipal Marina and Port Austin State Harbor. The bill passed 107-3.
“ I was glad to support this bill because it will have an immense benefit for the residents of Huron County,” Brown said. “Lake levels are at historic lows, and this action by the state is necessary to keep our harbors and marinas open.”
SB 233 would appropriate $23.3 million for 76 projects: 22 acquisition and 54 development. The bill would also appropriate $21 million for 49 emergency dredging projects. A dredging project is considered an emergency if it has been determined that “ emergency conditions warrant a dredging project to protect property, public health, safety or welfare .” Other public harbors may also be eligible for dredging with money that remains after these projects are completed. The bill now will go to the governor’s desk for his signature.
“Many cities and towns in the Thumb rely on harbor and marina access for not just recreation and quality of life, but also their economic livelihood ,” Brown said. “These projects will help residents, tourists and businesses continue to use and enjoy the Great Lakes for years to come.”
