U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a public meeting on 2013 Indiana Harbor dredging program.
This meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at 5 p.m. (Central), and will include a presentation of the 2013 Indiana Harbor dredging activities and schedule.
Background
In late Oct. 2012, construction was completed at the Indiana Harbor and Canal (IHC) Confined Disposal Facility (CDF), and dredging started at IHC for the first time since 1972. Over a period of eight to 10 years, this project will produce an estimated 1.8 million cubic yards of dredged materials. IHC is one of the busiest ports by tonnage and the number one area of contamination in the Great Lakes.
Portions of the federal channel will be dredged to achieve the congressionally-authorized navigation depths, and sediments in adjacent berthing and docking areas will be removed at the request of local industry and local sponsor, the East Chicago Waterway Management District.
After backlog dredging is complete, maintenance dredging will take place, as necessary, over a period of approximately 20 years, to remove re-accumulated sediments and maintain navigable depths in the waterway.
