U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King announced Tuesday that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers intends to allocate $3.5 million in federal funding to dredge Scarborough River as early as this fall.
“ This is welcome news for the Town of Scarborough ,” said Collins, a Republican, and King, an independent. “ Maine’s small ports, harbors, and rivers play an important role in our local economies and it’s critical that they are properly maintained. This funding will help ensure that Scarborough River can continue to provide economic benefits for the businesses that rely on it for their operations.”
Scarborough Town Manager Thomas Hall said, “ The Scarborough River is a critical piece of our economic and community landscape. This grant is significant and in addition to ensuring safe passage for both our commercial fishing fleet and recreational boat traffic, it will also provide for much needed beach nourishment on Western Beach.”
