The Port of Kingston’s dredging project looks like it has the final green light.

Port Manager Kori Henry said soil samples came back clean — meaning no bacterial contamination — which is “very exciting.”

The port is in discussions with Olympic Property Group to use the port’s soil from the dredge to cap the area that will be dredged in Port Gamble Bay as a part of OPG’s cleanup plan.

The dredge is on track to begin in July, when spawning-fish migration ends. Because of the fast rate in which sedimentation from behind Carpenter Creek bridge is flowing, the port will need to dredge again in five years, which is a part of the Army Corps of Engineers permit.

Henry said the port is also finalizing its eel grass mitigation transplant plan with the Corps.
