Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has followed his request and has allocated $8.95 million in Hurricane Sandy disaster dollars to Oregon Inlet.
Jones has been actively working with the administration and the Corps of Engineers to direct disaster money to Oregon Inlet. Oregon Inlet is eligible to receive funding through the Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Appropriations Act of 2013 (H.R. 152), a bill which was signed into law on January 29th. H.R. 152 provides $742 million to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers “for necessary expenses related to the consequences of Hurricane Sandy . . . to dredge Federal navigation channels, and repair damage to Corps projects.”
Jones has emphasized to the White House and to the Corps of Engineers that many Corps-maintained channels in Eastern North Carolina, including Oregon Inlet, sustained significant damage in late October of 2012 as a result of Hurricane Sandy.
Oregon Inlet is “ critical to North Carolina’s coastal economy, ” said Congressman Jones. “Fishermen and boaters depend on safe navigation through this channel. I am very pleased that the Corps agreed to use a portion of the Sandy relief money to help address the serious problems at Oregon Inlet.”
