Dredging work in Stromness Harbour is due to take place later this month.
According to the OIC, surveys have shown that silt has built up in the south, middle and north basins in the harbour. Dredging is now needed to ensure that the areas of the harbour closest to the shore remain accessible to vessels.
A spokesman said: “ The areas where silt will be removed are mainly used by inshore fishing, leisure and work boats, cruise ship tenders and the Stromness Lifeboat.
“Once the work is completed, it is anticipated that further dredging will not be required in the three basins for a considerable number of years. Dredging is expected to start later this month and take several weeks to complete. ”
